Nigeria/Benin border closure big blow to regional integration – Ghanaian president

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday described the closure of the land border between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin was a big blow to regional integration. Commenting for the first time since the Nigerian government closed its border with the Republic of Benin on August 20, Akufo-Addo said the move could negatively affect the regional integration agenda. Russian President Vladimir Putin has written off more than $20 billion in debt accumulated by African countries over time and during the Soviet era. This was announced on Wednesday by Putin during the Russian-African Summit taking place in Sochi, Russia, 23rd and 24th October 2019. “It was not only an act of generosity, but also a manifestation of pragmatism, because many of the African states were not able to pay interest on these loans,” Putin told TASS. While addressing the Russia-Africa Summit, he called for trade between Russia and African countries to be doubled in the next four to five years. Putin also said that Russia intends to increase its presence in Africa at state level. This first-ever Russia-Africa Summit brought more than 50 African leaders to Sochi.

Kaduna University Suspends Lecturer for Alleged Sex For Grade Scandal..

The Kaduna State University (KASU), suspends one of its academic staff, Mr Bala Umar, popularly known as A.B. Umar, for allegedly soliciting sex for grade.  Following a viral social media post that caught the attention of the Kaduna State Government, the government filled for an immediate investigation.  However, KASU said a committee was set up to investigate the allegations against Umar, following a one-man protest at KASU by a female graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.  A.B Umar, is said to have been  sacked by Ahmadu Bello University for sexual misconduct and later employed by KASU, was not fit to be a lecturer in any institution.

On the 09/05/2019, a Thursday, Steven Kefas Solomon (commonly known as Stephen Kefason) was arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State by operatives of the State Investigation Bureau of the Kaduna State Command of the Nigeria Police Force. He was brought to Kaduna thereafter on 10/05/2019, a Friday. His arrest was pursuant to many petitions written against him ranging from insulting persons and institutions, injurious falsehood, inciting disturbance, defamation, and cyberstalking. Among the lots of these petitions, two (2) stood out: the first was from Kaduna State Government; and the second was from the Executive Chairman of Kajuru Local Government Council. Lawyers for the family of former president Thomas Sankara, the father of the Burkinabe revolution who was killed in the October 1987 coup d’Ă©tat, declares they want former president Blaise CompaorĂ© to face trial.  CompaorĂ© has been exiled in CĂ´te d’Ivoire since his fall from power in 2014. “We hope to see the extradition of Blaise CompaorĂ©,” a lawyer for the Sankara family told a press briefing on Monday on the eve of the 32nd anniversary of Thomas Sankara’s death which happens to be on 14th October. “It would be good for everyone, for the collective conscience of Burkina Faso [and] for Blaise CompaorĂ© himself, and even his supporters, if he could come to Burkina Faso and be heard by the courts, if he could defend himself and give his side,” he insisted. More Debts For Nigeria As Buhari Seeks Fresh $3bn World Bank Loan

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed has said the $3bn loan being sought by the Federal Government from the World Bank would be deployed for reforms in the power sector. She said this during an interview with journalists on the sidelines of the World Bank/International Monetary Fund meetings holding in Washington DC, United States. Ahmed, who is leading the Federal Government’s delegation to the meeting said she would be holding further discussions with the management of the Bank to present how the fund would be disbursed for the project. She said based on the plan of the Federal Government for the power sector, the loan would be used for the development of transmission and distribution networks to enhance the delivery of electricity. Nigeria partially closed its borders with Benin in August this year to curb the spate of rice smuggling which Africa’s most populous country said is threatening its attempt to boost local production. The move, according to Nigeria’s High Commission to Ghana, Olufemi Michael Abikoye also aims at stopping the movement of illicit weapons and other smuggled goods through the various entry points.
